Labat
Labat’s Conure Aratinga labati Labat, 1724 EXTINCT
[Alt. Guadeloupe Parakeet]
Jean Baptiste Labat (1663–1738) was a French missionary, although British 17th-century biographers describe him as a pirate because he defended Guadeloupe against the English. He was sent by his order (the Dominicans) to the West Indies (1693), first to Martinique and then to Guadeloupe. He performed valuable botanical research and wrote extensively about his travels. His account of a hunting expedition (1696) described how a party of six men captured over 200 Black-capped Petrels Pterodroma hasitata, which they hauled from their burrows in Guadeloupe. Apparently he also decimated the flamingo colony on Aves Island (1705). There are no existing specimens of the conure that bears his name, so its taxonomy may never be fully elucidated and its status as a separate species is hypothetical.
Labrador
Ornate Tinamou ssp. Nothoprocta ornata labradori J. Cabot, 1997
José Sánchez Labrador (1717–1798) was a jesuit missionary and naturalist. He was a prolific author of catholic doctrine, anthropology, the Guarani language and agriculture as well as natural history. He entered the ‘Society of Jesus’ (1732) and was sent to South America two years later (1734) where he studied theology at the University of Córdoba (1734–1739). He continued to study and also began to teach theology in Buenos Aires as well as at several missions and eventually to Indians (1760–1767) before being expelled and taking up residence in Ravenna, Italy, where he wrote of his experiences of the people and natural history of South America. He wrote the four-volume Natural Paraguay (1771).

J. R. Laenen (DNF) was a Belgian collector, zoologist and explorer. He collected the firecrest (named after both him and his wife) while making a zoological survey in Algeria (1949), the sparrow, eromomela and warbler at Lake Chad (1954) and the mousebird in Niger (1955). Laenen and Niethammer (q.v.) wrote the article ‘Hivernage au Sahara’ (1954) and collected together in the Sudan.

Lafayette

[Alt. Sri Lanka Junglefowl]
Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Mothier, Marquis de Lafayette (1757–1834), was a French nobleman and cavalry officer. He inherited a large fortune but, coming from a long military line, he studied at the military academy in Versailles and became a cavalry captain aged 16 (1773). He bought a ship (1777) and left for America to fight in the revolution against the British. He was appointed a Major-General and was assigned to the staff of George Washington, achieving several notable victories.
